This the second ship to carry the name HMS Formidable. It was a second rate, 90-gun, ship-of-the-line. Built at Chatham Dockyard, launched 20-Aug-1777, 178ft long, 50ft wide and of 1,945 tons builders measurement. During her career, her armament was increased to 98-guns Re-rated as a third rate, 74-gun ship-of-the-line, 1813. Broken up at Chatham Sep-1813.

Won the Battle Honour: The Saints 1782.
